GHOST HUNTING

Pitch
In order to confront the ghosts that haunt him, Palestinian director Raed Andoni assembles an eclectic group of ex-prisoners to recreate the Al-Moskobiya, Israel’s main interrogation centre, where he was himself jailed at age 18. Day after day, these construction workers, a blacksmith, an architect, an assistant director give shape to their memories of how they survived with grit and a sense of humour. As the walls of the cells rise, the tongues and the emotions loosen. The film won the Best Documentary Award Berlinale 2017

Author's note
I was in charge of the animation parts of the film. The animation is around 5 minutes. Raed would use animation to personify his « ghost » : The 18 year old Raed. This character is « acting »in live action shots and in a dream/fantasy sequence. The Challenge was to create a character able to translate Raed’s complex feelings with subtlety and emotion. The animated character has to be part of the film cast. Raed wanted the animation to be made without any coquetry and show off. It was the first time for me to create a « clean » animation design and to add it in live action scenes.
